Practical information › Tools and techniques

To ensure an effective accompaniment, the Life Coach has a special way of listening, his knowledge, his questioning and different and varied tools at his disposal, depending on the situation, the request of the coachee, the current context and other specificities.

Some tools come from the NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming).

NLP, a name that encompasses the three most influential components involved in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming. The neurological system regulates how our body functions, language determines how we interface and communicate with other people and our programming determines the kinds of models of the world we create. Neuro-Linguistic Programming describes the fundamental dynamics between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how their interplay affects our body and behaviour (programming).

  • The Map is not the Territory. As human beings, we can never know reality. We can only know our perceptions of reality. We experience and respond to the world around us primarily through our sensory representational systems. It is our « neuro-linguistic » map of reality that determines how we behave and that gives those behaviours meaning, not reality itself. It is generally not reality that limits us or empowers us, but rather our map of reality.
  • Life and « Mind » are Systemic Processes. The processes that take place within a human being and between human beings and their environment are systemic. Our bodies, our societies and our universe form complex systems and sub-systems all of which interact with and mutually influence each other. It is not possible to completely isolate any part of the system from the rest of the system.

All of the models and techniques of NLP are based on the combination of these principles. In the belief system of NLP it is not possible for human beings to know objective reality. Wisdom, ethics and ecology do not derive from having the one 'right' or 'correct' map of the world, because human beings would not be capable of making one. Rather, the goal is to create the richest map possible that respects the systemic nature and ecology of ourselves and the world we live in.

The people who are most effective are the ones who have a map of the world that allows them to perceive the greatest number of available choices and perspectives. NLP is a way of enriching the choices that you have and perceive as available in the world around you.

Excellence comes from having many choices. Wisdom comes from having multiple perspectives.

Richard BANDLER, mathematician, and John GRINDER, linguist can be considered as the founders of NLP.

The NLP is a set of models and techniques of personal development, originating from the United States and dating from the 1970s. They are designed to improve communication between individuals and to personally improve. NLP can be used in personal or business related issues. The term was invented by John Grinder and Richard Bandler and is based on the work of other psychotherapists, Milton Erickson (founder of Clinical Hypnosis ), Virginia Satir (founder of family therapy) and Fritz Perls (founder of Gestalt Therapy).

Some of the related protocols are anchors, perception positions, dissociation and association to improve the feeling of a person and to use his own resources.

Another tool is the HUDSON Model, a model of transitions. Frederic Hudson believed in two strong thoughts:
  • Change is constant in and around us
  • We live cycles (such as nature "lives" seasons)

Therefore, we need to find meanings for the way we live our life, whatever we do. We must visualize the future, learn to develop scenarios, refine steps and have concrete objectives.

This model is based on 6 grids:
  • The cycles of change or phases
  • Areas of life
  • The old and the new principles
  • 6 important values
  • The life cycles or age
  • Adult learning
Important tools of this approach are:
  • Have goals: this structures change (practical objectives)
  • Work on the vision of life (puts in perspective the present, gives energy)
  • Find a meaning
  • Know how to define action plans, strategies, plan next steps.

The Logical Levels model was formalized by R. DILTS and results from the work of G. BATESON on the levels of learning. This model has 6 levels:
Environment, Behaviours, Capabilities or Strategies, Beliefs and Values, Identity and Mission and Spirituality and Purpose.

This model allows making distinctions, in a given context, between information operating on different logical levels. The fact to consider one level after the other develops a more comprehensive view of a problem.

When a problem situation is analyzed, this model invites to identify the levels where the problem is situated to realign the logical levels of a person regarding his goal.
